It’s hard to really pick one single aspect of playing that makes blues playing what it is, someone like Stevie Ray Vaughan would say that thinking too much of the notes, and where you are on the neck actually interrupts any sort of "emotional flow", and to make sure that you’re in the moment emotionally when playing. He explains this wonderfully here – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb8rrBviHqE&feature=fvsr
However, there are a lot of other important things that you need to learn prior to this emotional experience, I’d probably say:
1) Scales in many positions – Pentatonic major and minor are very important and dominant in blues music, a little library of personal licks will help you develop style too.
2) Techniques like vibrato, bending (half and full), hammer-on, pull-off, tapping (in fusion-blues), sliding and double stopping are all important.
3) Knowing chord progressions/types, especially the 12 bar blues I IV V 1 progression.
4) Knowledge of guitar tone, because you need to sound good when playing.
Hope this little bit of info has helped, good luck with your playing in the future!

I’m looking to learn some good swampy blues music on guitar. I’ve learn t a couple of Stevie Ray Vaughan tracks, now looking to expand the repertoire. Any recommendations of artists/songs would be great.
Stefan Grossman has good DVD’s he studied under Reverend Gary Davis(very complicated piedmont style only picked with 2 fingers thumb and index) , Mississippi John Hurt, and Skip James one of the foremost experts in the country blues style not sure what u mean by swamp blues but check out old delta blues like Robert Johnson(thought by many as king of delta blues only released 41 sides) or listen to Mance Lipscomb or Lightnin Hopkins: Howlin wolf blues, shotgun, short haired women or check out big bill broonzy, Lonnie Johnson, Blind Willie Mctell, Blind Blake, Pink Anderson, Frank Stokes, furry Lewis also B.B. Kings Into the Night is one my favorite songs of his I’ve heard all these blues men are great some of the best ever check out you will not be sorry
