Should I take Guitar Lessons?

Friday, January 20th, 2012

I’ve been self learned for almost the past 4 years now and I am semi-ok with my scales now. I have the basic music theory down with chord progressions. and I have no problem doing rhythm or lead guitar for the most part.

I am no means particularly ::good::, but at this point, I’m wondering if there is a need for lessons still.

I imagine that this point, its just listening to lots of music and sort of exploring the fretboard for cool sounding licks.

and on the technical side, i would also be working on my basic hammer ons and pull offs and legatos and sweeps and etc. etc.

And then on the musicianship side, I admittedly cannot read music like I should. Not tabs, mind you. Like actual musical notes that are quarter notes and 1/8 notes and rests and clefs and what crescendos and dimenuendos, etc.etc. are

I feel like if I were to get lessons, all the guy would tell me to do is to do the things I just described but have been too lazy to practice. I don’t consider any of these things particularly HARD, it just takes a bunch of time for me to sit and practice at (something I’d have to do regardless of lessons)

And my goal? Well I’d like to be a weekend gig warrior some day. Life as a pro musician is way too rough and even if I were to make it semi-well, I don’t think I’d be able to handle touring 300 days out of the year. I love music, but i do not like how rough the business can be. Maybe a youtube superstar someday, though.

I love LOVE guys like Clapton and Buddy Guy and Jimi Hendrix (especially hendrix). So that’s what I’m aiming for at the moment. "Shredding" like in the way that the metal guys do it, does not interest me in one bit. nor do things like tapping or those pinch harmonic things that make it sound like cats fighting.

So all you experienced musicians and guitar teachers out there:

What do lessons offer that I cannot do on my own? Please give a good, honest answer because I seriously do want to get better, but at the same time money is tight and I don’t want to learn something that I could just learned anyways from a place like http://www.gosk.com or http://www.justinguitar.com or something. I will spend the money, though, if I think that i can learn something interesting.

You do bring up a good point. I am self-taught all the way and NEVER took a course. I studied sight-reading, arranging and what helped me immensely if my ear training. I developeda good ear due to the fact that I used to play alond with my fave music. Eventually, the ear got used to picking up chords and notes without using the instruments. Very useful for writing.

I ended up at Berklee College and after audtioning, I studied for 1 year and because a teacher. Their wasn’t much I couldn’t do. Shredding means nothing. Actually, its worthless. Play with the heart and soul and you will go a long way.

The advantage of a teacher is that you have the chance to see if your picking technique is good, the fingering, and other stuff that you never think of practicial liked for instance Isometric fingering. This is so important because it adds versatility in your fingering and soling.

The advantage at Berklee is that we go one-on-one and we improve the technique of the student we work with. So we develop a more friendly atmosphere and I would help improve the student according to what he loves, not what I loved. Their are procedures but eventually, the student got ahead in the field he chose when he auditioned.

Good Luck

bass or lead guitar, which do you prefer?

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

i want to take up guitar lessons, but i’m not sure which one to do.

i’ve always liked bass guitar as i only like music with a good beat and a strong bass line, and apparently its easier to play
but lead guitar has better tunes etc

which one do you prefer?

ALSO what guitar makes do you reccomend?

Bass guitarists are a little less common, and I think the bass guitar is totally underrated. It’s an awesome instrument, and sounds amazing if you play it well. It adds another dimension to the music. It’s supposedly really tough on the fingers though. Guitars are cool too, shredding is always fun =]. Personally, I think I’d start off with the bass guitar, considering its a little easier and once you get the hang of it you could move on to guitar. I’m sort of in the same situation as you though, because both are awesome instruments and I’m not sure which one I want to pick up.

Now moving on to guitars, you have three options: you could get a pretty crappy starter guitar, a little bit more expensive one that you could still use when you improve, or a really really good one. I wouldn’t recommend getting a really expensive one unless your super rich, because if you just don’t like playing, all that money would go to waste. I also wouldn’t recommend getting a crappy starter guitar when you could spend just a little bit more and get one that’s a lot better. When I was looking at guitars, I really wanted to get one of those Epiphone LP Specials, I think they’re about $180 or less. But then I did a TON of research and came across this site http://rondomusic.com/ and I have heard nothing but good things about their guitars. Not sure if you’re into LPs or Telecasters, but they have a ton of guitars, and they’re supposedly the BEST knockoffs you can get. The cheapest ones are around $69.95, and I’m not too sure how good those are. But if you go up into the $150-$200 price range, they have some gorgeous guitars that are amazing quality. This is the one I plan on buying http://www.rondomusic.com/al2000te.html. So I would definitely recommend getting a guitar from this site, because they’re inexpensive and great quality. If you don’t believe me or want to find out more about the guitars on the site, go to agileguitarforum.com they have a ton of information, pics, reviews, and more so that you can pick the perfect guitar for you. Sorry this was soooooooo long and probably took you years to read lol but I hope I helped at least a little bit. Oh and I’m guessing your a girl because of your name, but I think its so cool that you want to pick up the bass or guitar, seriously not very many girls play the bass or guitar nowadays.

How do I learn how to play lead guitar without paying for lessons?

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

10 points!
I probably should’ve stated that I’ve played the guitar for almost 10 years…

Listen, play, listen, play some more, practice, listen, play. Repeat until the fingertips on your fretting hand are toughened up. Then concentrate on your other hand and when you have that fixed, put the two together.
Then practice again. Keep listening as well. In time you will be able to make it up as you go along.

One major problem is keeping your work new. That can be done in many ways. One is by dropping tuning a half tone on a couple of strings, raising it a half tone on another couple, and listening. Then, when you correct the tuning, play the same exact notes you heard.

And then, listen and play some more. Never stop.

It really is that simple. The trick is to never lose interest, and never become a machine.

Looking for a good online guitar school or lessons for intermediate metal?

Saturday, December 10th, 2011

I’ve been playing guitar for 14 years. I play mostly grunge, alternative and screamo. I’m looking to up my skills and learn how to play metal better. I want to play lead and learn skills like shredding, arpeggios and building up speed. Are there any online guitar lessons or schools that anyone would recommend? Please share your experiences. I’m not looking for really good lessons and I’m willing to pay for a site that is worth it. Thank you for your time.

There is only one site I can confidently recommend for somebody who’s been playing for a while: GuitarMasterClass.net

The only downside is they recently jacked up the subscription cost (it’s about $20/month when paid yearly). It used to be much more reasonable.

But if you have the money to spare, you’re guaranteed to learn some new things, and be enticed with some styles and techniques you’ve never bothered to try before.
I’ve been playing 22 years and I still learn new things and pick up new ideas and whatnot from the site.

Can anybody recomend some good free guitar learning sites for a lead guitarist?

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

The lessons should be a bit easy.

Download Power Tab Editor. It’s free and there are tons of tabs on the internet to download. It is the best tool for learning songs, new styles, rhythm, lead, etc. It’s in SuperTab format and has a metronome so you can practice your timing. You can also make your own tabs. This is a GREAT tool. I’ve also left a link below to a good site for learning music theory and another that has tons of scales, chords, etc.

Have Fun, and Good luck!!
