3 good songs to learn on my acoustic guitar?

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Please give me specific songs, I have guitar lessons tonight and my instructor told me last Friday to think of 3 songs I want to learn, I can’t decide which ones yet! I like Jack Johnson, Never Shout Never, Mayday Parade, Death Cab For Cutie, The Goo Goo Dolls, The Spill Canvas, Bright Eyes, things like that, and I want to find some new music that I’d like, any suggestions? No country or rap stuff, please

Run around – Blues Traveler
Time of you life (strum) – Green Day
Flake – Jack Johnson
Slide – Goo Goo Dolls (Don’t worry about intro)
Lola – The Kinks
Wonderwall – Oasis (2nd capo)
About a Girl – Nirvana
Horse with no Name – America

What is the best type of guitar for blues and country music?

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

I am new and have never taken a lesson. I was just wondering what kind of guitar I should be looking to purchase.

Thanks

Well, blues and country are different.

For blues, most people use a Les Paul. A Les Paul has a thicker, creamier tone, which is a great attribute to blues music. It also handles light distortion very well for the heavier blues stuff. Gibson makes Les Pauls, but they are very expensive, so look at the Les Pauls that Epiphone makes. Epiphone is owned by Gibson, but their guitars are made over seas and with some different parts so they are MUCH cheaper, but still great!

For blues you might also want to look into Stratocasters, made by Fender. Their tone is very rich, but they sound SO much different from Les Pauls. Go on youtube and listen to the differences.

Country is an easy one. THE country electric guitar is a Telecaster. Telecasters have that "twang" that no other guitar does. It’s the industry standard for country music. Fender makes Telecasters, but they are a bit expensive. So you might want to look into Squier’s Telecasters. Squier is owned by Fender, but they are much cheaper, and still pretty good for the price.

How do I convince my dad to let me take guitar lessons?

Monday, December 26th, 2011

Ok, so, my dad plays in a local country band, and he plays the rhythm guitar and is the lead singer. I want to learn how to do the same thing, but with pop punk music like all time low, hey Monday, etc. He wants to teach me, but he even said it himself that he has no teaching experience and doesn’t know how to teach- when my cousin asked him to teach him. I’ve been playing for about 10 months now, and can strum chords and sing, but I’m just a beginner since I don’t know strumming patterns, bar chords, power chords, etc. I can only play the basic chords like A, C, D, E, G, Am, Em, and Dm. He says that I can learn on my own and that I have gotten a lot better since I’ve started. but I haven’t been progressing at all in the last few months and he doesnt see that because he’s always too busy to teach me. He says to teach myself the chords and then we’ll work on other stuff… But that was 10 months ago… And I still dont know how to do bar chords. He says that getting lessons at my level of experience is a waste of money because all they’re going to teach me is where to put my fingers. But I feel like I’m behind the level that I should be at. When he was 19, he learned the chords and then went to a teacher- he’s said before that he’s not an amazing musician, but he’s good enough. I’m 15- why not just start with a teacher. Sorry about my rant, how do I convince him to let me take guitar lessons?

There are so many online lessons out there, why spend the money?

When learning guitar, are lessons essential?

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

I’m thinking of getting an electric guitar because thats one of the things i would love to be able to do; play an instrument. The only problem is that i live out in the country about 2 hours from the city so I can’t get lessons. the only person i know who can actually play i dont see very often. Is it possible to learn by watching youtube videos? Or is there pretty much no hope of learning without help?
Thanx!!

yes! it’s totally possible. i got my acoustic this past christmas, and i’ve got the basic chords down and everything. the techniques, you’ll have to figure out yourself (it shouldn’t be that hard, it’s mostly just what feels comfortable with your fingers) but the rest you learn by seeing. :) i’m sure youtube videos will help!
you’ll have to keep practicing and get your fingertips tough and all that, though. it’ll hurt because the skin might peel and all that, but it’s TOTALLY worth it!!!

P.S. if you didn’t already know ( i don’t mean to sound snooty ) you should get an amp if you’re going to get an electric guitar. there are some starter kits online that sell guitars and amps and picks and strings together (if you’re lucky)! those would be great for you, i think.

Have fun!

The preacher man says it’s the end of time
And the Mississippi River she’s a goin’ dry
The interest is up and the Stock Markets down And you only get mugged
If you go down town

I live back in the woods, you see
A woman and the kids, and the dogs and me
I got a shotgun rifle and a 4-wheel drive
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

I can plow a field all day long
I can catch catfish from dusk till dawn
We make our own whiskey and our own smoke too Ain’t too many things these ole boys can’t do We grow good ole tomatoes and homemade wine And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Because you can’t starve us out
And you cant makes us run
Cause one-of- ‘em old boys raisin ole shotgun And we say grace and we say Ma’am
And if you ain’t into that we don’t give a darn

We came from the West Virginia coal mines
And the Rocky Mountains and the and the western skies And we can skin a buck; we can run a trot-line And a country boy can survive Country folks can survive

I had a good friend in New York City
He never called me by my name, just hillbilly My grandpa taught me how to live off the land And his taught him to be a businessman He used to send me pictures of the Broadway nights And I’d send him some homemade wine

But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife For 43 dollars my friend lost his life Id love to spit some beechnut in that dudes eyes And shoot him with my old 45 Cause a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Cause you can’t starve us out and you can’t make us run Cause one-of-’em old boys raisin ole shotgun And we say grace and we say Ma’am And if you ain’t into that we don’t give a darn

We’re from North California and south Alabam
And little towns all around this land
And we can skin a buck; we can run a trot-line And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
